1. My pet is missing. What should I do?

Call the Rantoul Police Department at (217) 892-2103. Even if we do not have your pet, we will record the details and your contact information and call you should your pet be located.

2. I found a cat or dog. How can I find its owner?

Call the Rantoul Police at (217) 892-2103 to find out if the pet has been reported as missing. If so, animal control will attempt to contact the rightful owner(s). If you wish to hold on to the pet for a few days to see if the owner turns up, you should leave a found report. Otherwise you may request that the animal be picked up.

3. When does an animal need to be vaccinated with the Village of Rantoul?

If you own a dog or cat, you are required to have the animal vaccinated. The animal must be vaccinated at four months of age or older. Any new residence to the Village of Rantoul has 30 days to vaccinate their animal. The animal must be current on its rabies vaccination and you must be able to provide proof.

4. What if I have found a dead animal?

If the deceased animal is located on a Village of Rantoul street call Rantoul Public Works at (217) 892-6526. If the deceased animal is your pet, you may wish to contact your veterinarian to discuss your options for disposal. Wild animals not located on a public street should be disposed of by an adult by using gloves or a shovel to place the animal inside two plastic bags then placing it in the trash.

5. What if I have a problem with a wild animal on my property?

If the wild animal is healthy leave it alone. If you have a question about a wild animal call the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (217) 784-4730. If the wild animal is a nuisance in the attic or crawlspace, there are private businesses you may contact to assist you in animal removal. Please note that state law requires a permit for trapping animals. Trapping wildlife without a permit is illegal.

6. May I own a pot-bellied pig or other exotic animal within the Village of Rantoul?

Animal Control has restrictions on the types of animals that can be kept in the city. A pot-bellied pig is considered swine which is prohibited in Village of Rantoul. Before acquiring any animal other than a dog or cat, be sure to check with Animal Control to make sure you can legally keep the animal in your neighborhood. Generally speaking, the following are illegal:

• All poisonous snakes and reptiles including alligators and similar animals
  
• All primates
  
• All bears
  
• All wild or exotic cats including hybrids
  
• All wild canines and hybrids such as wolf crosses
  
• All wild native and exotic animals such as raccoons, skunks, otters, opossums, bats, deer, and antelopes

7. What type of animal calls does the Rantoul Police handle?

The Rantoul Police Department will respond to reports of stray animals, animal bites, animal abuse, or inquiries about any other animal-related issues. 8. What are the leash requirements within the Village of Rantoul?

All dogs and cats must be leashed and under their owner’s control when entering upon the lawn or private property of anyone but the animal owner. Any dog or cat not on the premises of its owner or such other person who has custody, possession, or control over the animal and is not on a leash is considered “at large” or a stray animal. Any dog or cat brought into any shop, store, or retail establishment during operating hours, or into any public building at any time (unless the dog or cat are working animals) shall be considered “at large.”
